LED, interior and garden lighting
Lighting installation in Parnell
Good lighting suits the room it is in. A tall villa lounge, a compact apartment, a shop window and a restaurant dining room each need something different. Our registered electricians plan and install LED, interior and garden lighting for Parnell homes and businesses.

Lighting an older Parnell home
Villas built before the First World War have tall rooms. The Unitary Plan's guide to Auckland house styles notes that room heights only came down with the transitional villas built around the war, so a Parnell villa lounge often has a high ceiling and a single central light that leaves the corners dim. Edwardian villas add another consideration: pressed metal ceilings, which are part of what makes them worth owning and should not be cut into for a grid of downlights.
In rooms like these, lighting usually works best in layers. A pendant or ceiling rose keeps the room's centre, wall lights and picture lights bring the walls up, and lamps on switched outlets light the corners without touching the ceiling at all. In a kitchen or bathroom added in a lean-to at the back, where the ceiling is plain and lower, recessed LED downlights make sense. We can suggest a layout and a switching plan, including dimmers and two-way switching along a villa's long central hallway.
Getting LED right
LED is now the obvious choice for nearly every fitting. EECA's Gen Less guide puts the saving at around 85% less energy than incandescent bulbs, and $100 to $300 over the life of each bulb replaced. A few things decide whether the change is a good one.
Change the whole downlight
For recessed downlights, EECA recommends replacing the whole fitting, not just the bulb. Most of the saving comes from stopping heat escaping into the ceiling, and most LED fittings can sit against insulation.
Pick the colour for the room
Warm white is more comfortable in living areas and bedrooms. Cool white suits garages, workshops and anywhere you need contrast.
Watch enclosed fittings
LEDs need ventilation, so a bulb fully sealed in glass or plastic, as in some porch lights, can fail early. A fitting designed for LED is the better answer.
Match the dimmer
Older dimmers were made for incandescent bulbs and can make LEDs flicker or hum. A dimmer rated for LED solves it.
Shops, galleries and restaurants
Parnell's business association describes the suburb as known for its restaurants and bars, its boutiques and its galleries, and in all of them lighting is part of how the business sells. A dining room wants warm, dimmable light that changes through the evening. A gallery or boutique wants clean, even light on the walls and the stock, with fittings that can be re-aimed when the display changes. Back-lit shelving, under-counter strips and feature pendants all need their own circuits and drivers, planned before the joinery goes in.
The running cost matters as well. EECA's guidance for businesses says switching to LED alone can cut lighting costs by up to 70%, and controls such as zoned switching and occupancy sensors in back rooms and toilets save more again. Lighting is often part of a bigger refit, so see our page on commercial electrical work too.

Garden and outdoor lighting
Parnell is a suburb of ridges and steep-sided gullies, which means steps, sloping paths and gardens that fall away from the house. Lighting those makes a house safer to come home to after dark and makes a garden usable in the evening. We install path and step lights, feature lighting on trees and walls, deck and courtyard lighting, and security lighting on sensors, all with fittings rated for outdoor use and on protected circuits. Smart systems that are set and switched from a phone app are an option too.
Outdoor cable runs often mean digging, and the supply to your own house may be buried in the same garden. We locate underground services before trenching. If an outdoor circuit keeps tripping after rain, that is a fault worth finding rather than living with.
Lighting questions
Can I just swap my old bulbs for LED?
For ordinary bulbs, usually yes. Downlights, dimmed circuits and enclosed fittings are where it pays to get advice, because the fitting or the dimmer may need changing too.
Will downlights damage a pressed metal ceiling?
Cutting holes in one would. We light rooms with decorative ceilings from the ceiling rose, the walls and switched lamps instead.
Can you add outside lights to a character house?
Yes. The Unitary Plan's character statements are about how a house looks from the street, so for fittings on the street front of a house in a special character area, check with Auckland Council before they go up. Lights at the back and in the garden are a simpler decision.
Can my lights be controlled from my phone?
Yes. Smart lighting can be switched, dimmed and put on timers from an app, outside as well as in, and home automation can link it with other systems in the house, such as an alarm. Some LED bulbs can also change colour and brightness without a dimmer switch.
Do I get a certificate for new lighting?
New circuits and new fixed wiring come with a Certificate of Compliance. Like-for-like replacement of a light fitting is maintenance work and does not.
