Fibre and data
Data and fibre cabling in Parnell
WiFi alone struggles in a house with thick walls or across three floors of an office. Our electricians install the fibre and data cabling behind a reliable network, for Parnell home offices, apartments and businesses.

A wired network in an older house
Many Parnell home offices are a front bedroom in a villa, a long way down the hall from wherever the fibre came in. The answer is usually cable, not a stronger router. Chorus recommends Cat6 cabling in a star layout, with each outlet run back to a central point, and an ONT, the fibre box your modem plugs into, placed centrally and near where the internet is used most. It also notes that the home distributor box, the jack points and the cable are supplied by you, your builder or your electrician, not by Chorus.
In a villa the central hallway, the roof space and the subfloor make that layout easier than it sounds, and data cable can share the routes we use for power. If you are renovating, run the cable while the linings are off, because Chorus points out that pulling cable then is cheaper and cleaner than retrofitting. If the whole house is being rewired anyway, see our page on villa and house rewiring and do both together.
What we install
Cat6 data points
Outlets in bedrooms, the study and living areas, with extra at the main TV position, each cable run back to one place.
Patch panel and distributor
Every run ends on a labelled patch panel in a home distributor box or comms cabinet, so it can be traced and changed later.
Wired access points
Ceiling or wall access points cabled back to the router, for even WiFi through solid walls and up several floors.
TV and coaxial outlets
Data and aerial outlets together at the TV, and tidy cable to a wall-mounted screen.
Cameras and alarms
Cabling for CCTV and alarm systems, and a check that an alarm that used a copper phone line will still work on fibre.
Tested runs
Each cable is tested end to end and labelled at both ends before we leave.
Apartments and shared buildings
Parnell has apartment buildings from the 1920s onwards, and in a shared building the network is a shared problem. Chorus explains that connecting apartments to fibre involves work in areas shared by several residents, often with equipment in a communications room, and that in some cases consent from neighbours or other parties is needed before it can install. Inside your own apartment, we run data cabling from where the fibre arrives to the rooms you use, using existing conduit where it exists. Where cable has to pass through shared areas, the body corporate or building manager needs to agree first, and we can explain to them exactly what is proposed.
Offices and shops on Parnell Road
A Parnell Road office might be in a converted villa, above a brick shop or in a post-war block, and each has its own way of getting cable from the comms cabinet to the desks. In older buildings we follow ceiling voids, floor cavities and existing risers, and keep cable out of sight in rooms where the period features are the point. Point of sale, cameras, printers and phones all want reliable wired connections, and we can cable them as part of a wider commercial electrical job, with the power and data planned together.

Data cabling questions
Can the fibre box be moved to a better spot?
The ONT belongs to Chorus and stays with the house, so moving it is arranged through your broadband provider. Often the simpler fix is to leave it where it is and run Cat6 from it to where you need the connection.
Is Cat6 worth it over Cat5e?
For new cable, yes. Chorus recommends Cat6 because it supports faster speeds as needs grow, and the cost of the cable is small next to the cost of installing it twice.
Do I need a data cabinet?
For a few outlets, a small home distributor box is enough. An office with many points, cameras and a server is better with a proper comms cabinet.
Can you cable my apartment without the body corporate?
Inside your own apartment, usually. Anything through shared walls, ceilings or risers needs the body corporate or building manager to agree first.
Can you mount the TV and hide the cables?
Yes. TV wall-mounting is part of our TV and home entertainment work, and the power, data and aerial outlets can be placed behind the screen so the cables run inside the wall rather than down it.
