Emergency call-outs

24/7 emergency electrician in Parnell

Electrical emergencies do not keep business hours. Our registered electricians are available for call-outs in Parnell 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for homes, apartments, shops and restaurants. Call 021 156 4005.

Power off? Check the network first

If the lights go out, look out of the window before you call anyone. When the neighbours are dark too, the fault is almost certainly on the network, and Vector's outage page lets you check your address for a current outage or report one. Storms, trees touching lines and cars hitting poles are the usual causes, and an electrician cannot restore a network fault.

If your neighbours have power and you do not, the fault is on your side: your switchboard, your wiring or the service line from your boundary to the meter, which the property owner owns. That is when to call us. Vector also notes that after an outage it may need a property's installation to be safe before it is reconnected, so if you have been told your power will stay off until a safety issue is fixed, we can do the repair and certify it.

Call an electrician now if

You can smell burning

A hot, fishy or burning plastic smell from a socket, switch, light or the switchboard. Turn off the power at the main switch if it is safe to reach.

Something is sparking or scorched

Brown scorch marks on a plug or socket, or sparks when something is plugged in. Leave it switched off.

Water has reached the electrics

A leak through a light fitting, a flooded subfloor or water in the switchboard. Keep clear and switch off at the main if you can do it from dry ground.

The power will not stay on

A main switch or breaker that trips straight back off when it is reset. Leave it off rather than forcing it.

Your business has lost power

A shop, office, cafe or restaurant with no power, or with refrigeration or a kitchen down.

While you wait

  1. Someone has had a shock

Do not touch them while they may still be in contact with the power. Switch off at the main switch, then dial 111. Anyone who has had a shock should see a doctor, even if they feel fine.

  2. There is a fire

Never throw water on an electrical fire. Turn off the power if you safely can, get everyone out and dial 111.

  3. A line is down

Treat any fallen power line as live. Keep everyone well away and call the lines company straight away.

  4. Then call us

Ring 021 156 4005 and tell us the address, what happened and what is switched off now.

Emergencies in Parnell's buildings

Where the fault is changes what helps us reach it quickly. In an apartment building, the main switch and the meters are often in a locked meter room, so if the building has an after-hours manager or a body corporate contact, have their number ready. On Parnell Road, a restaurant that loses power during service needs the kitchen and the chillers back first, and we restore those first wherever the fault allows. In an older house, a blown rewireable fuse should be replaced only with wire of the correct rating, never heavier, and a fuse that blows again is a sign the board itself is due for a switchboard upgrade. When the emergency is over and the cause is less obvious, our fault finding service tracks it down properly.

Emergency call-out questions

Do you really come out at night and on weekends?

Yes. Our electricians are available for call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Can you fix a power cut in the street?

No. Faults on the network are repaired by Vector's crews. We fix faults on your side of the point of supply: the service line, the board and the wiring.

What should I tell you when I call?

The address, what you saw, heard or smelt, what is off now and whether anyone is hurt. For a business, tell us your trading hours and what equipment matters most.

Should I switch off at the main switch?

Yes, if there is a burning smell, sparking, water in the electrics or someone has had a shock, and the switchboard is safe to reach from dry ground. If nothing is dangerous, leave things as they are so we can see what is and is not working when we arrive.

Will the emergency repair be certified?

Repairs are tested before power is restored, and where the work is prescribed electrical work you receive the certificate for it.
